Source: St.mini storage Louis Post-DispatchJan. 06--A makeshift emergency shelter south of downtown had more people than cots Saturday night, but no one was turned away. The shelter, set up at the 12th and Park Recreation Center, had 124 homeless people seeking a warm place to stay. The gym was set up with 100 cots."We gave them a mat or blanket and sheet and told them to curl up in a corner," Bill Siedhoff, director of Human Services for St. Louis, said Sunday of the overflow crowd."We anticipate more tonight. It's going to be God awful outside."With about a foot of snow on the ground and temperatures dipping below zero, volunteers are partnering with the city and agencies such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army to get the homeless off the streets.St. Louis County is offering an underused shelter for the city's homeless, Siedhoff said.Sunday night, buses operated by Metro Transit-St. Louis transported some of the homeless to Affton Community Center on Mackenize Road for the night. Just four people showed up at the makeshift shelter there Saturday night, Siedhoff said.Metro also provided buses Sunday morning to transport about 70 people from the 12th and Park center to The Bridge, a homeless services facility at Centenary United Methodist Church, at 16th and Olive streets, where meals were being served.About 2 p.m. Sunday, 50 people were crowded into the recreation center's lunch room where volunteers were serving donated food, including bagels and macaroni and cheese."Everyone being helped is extremely grateful," said Lisa Young with Winter Outreach, an all-volunteer group that focuses on feeding the homeless. "They would come outside and help unload the cars as volunteers dropped off food."Among those at the recreation center was Tiffaney Edwards, 39. She said she had been living in a car before coming to the shelter. At five months pregnant, Edwards said she had to find a warm place to stay."I'm glad 迷你倉his place is here," Edwards said. She sat on the floor of the cafeteria, a coat draped over one shoulder.Siedhoff said efforts had been stepped up to get the city's homeless off the streets. He provided police with 15 locations where those living on the streets often gather. He said that of 13 homeless people located, 10 had gone to a shelter."We're trying to pull out all the stops," Siedhoff said.Sunday marked the 20th night the makeshift shelter at the recreation center has been open this winter, and it will be open for at least two more nights with the coldest weather yet to come. All of last winter, the shelter opened 13 times.Despite all the efforts, not all homeless people are seeking shelter. On Sunday, two homeless people were in the median of Kingshighway Boulevard at Highway 40 (Interstate 64), holding signs asking for help.Downtown, John Gaither was tucked into a tent he had set up near the front doors of a brick office building at the corner of Olive and 19th streets. His laptop was plugged into an outlet just outside the building's entrance. Talking through a small opening in the tent, he said he had eight blankets to help keep him warm.Gaither said he had been living in a rooming house a block away but had a disagreement with the owner and moved out about six months ago. Since then, he's been living on the streets."This ain't nothing," Gaither, 50, said of the cold weather. "I'm a country boy and used to go deer hunting. We know how to deal with weather like this."More weather resources:YOUR PHOTOS: Snow images from #stlwxPOWER OUTAGES: Find power outages by ZIP code.CLOSINGS: School or community cancellationsLIVE UPDATES: What's happening in your neighborhood?7-DAY FORECAST: Video update from Fox2TRAFFIC: The latest road conditionsCopyright: ___ (c)2014 the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Visit the St. Louis Post-Dispatch at .stltoday.com Distributed by MCT Information Services文件倉
