Truebenbach recalled, thinking back to Saturday night. After her name was called, Truebenbach stood there for several moments without moving, trying to grasp the concept. Finally, the girl behind Truebenbach tapped her in the back and said, "Demi, you're supposed to go up there and get your crown."Within no time, a crown sat atop Truebenbach's head and her hands were full of flowers.Truebenbach, a freshman at Frederick Area High School, was also named Miss Congeniality. Her mother, Carolyn, quickly sent a text telling people her daughter had earned two titles."So many people have congratulated me. My phone was blowing up at the end of the coronation," Demi said Thursday."My mom had my phone in my purse, and it just kept ringing and ringing and ringing," she said. When she got back to the hotel, "I had 20 missed calls and 35 text messages. I also had about six Facebook messages congratulating me."Carolyn said Thursday she was "surprised and really happy for her. It was a very nice surprise."Approach to lifeThe 15-year-old has no trouble meeting people."A lot of people have told me I'm an outgoing person," she said. She tries to have a good, positive attitude about everything. It's her goal to not take things seriously and to make things fun for other people. She tries to think of other people before herself."Friends and family come first to me," she says.Truebenbach looks at the glass as half full. Another favorite expression is, "Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there's footprints on the moon."Truebenbach isn't the only outgoing member of her family. Her sisters, Amanda, 28, and Blair, 24, both won the local Frederick Snow Queen contest, and Blair was Miss Congeniality at the 儲存倉tate Snow Queen Festival.Cotton candyTruebenbach is the second queen in the last two years to be involved with the cotton candy team at Frederick Area High School. Alyxis Perry, the 2012 South Dakota Snow Queen, was also part of the squad, which is open to band and chorus members. Those students make cotton candy and sell it at concerts and athletic events. The Truebenbachs live 13 miles west of Frederick, just north of Willow Lake. Her father, Mitch, owns Agriswine Alliance, a hog management company based in Hecla. Her mother works at the company.Demi's brother, Cole, was in a serious dirt bike accident in 2012 in Rapid City. She also plays basketball and volleyball. She's listed in the program as being 5-foot-10, but that's a slight exaggeration. Truebenbach also shows a horse and takes part in rodeo, primarily barrel racing. In addition, she likes to fish at the family's cabin on Elm Lake. Her favorite class is science. She has a job at Jo's Schoolhouse Cafe in Hecla.Joining the contestShe entered the Frederick Area Junior Snow Queen contest because her sisters told her it was fun. In addition, "I love wearing big, poofy dresses," and making friends sounded like a good time to Truebenbach. At an impromptu interview, judges asked Truebenbach which she would choose -- love, power or money. She chose the first."Love is what brings people together and keeps them together. Without it, the world would be chaos," she said. "I don't even know why I said it."She was nervous about facing an impromptu question. But the judges must have liked it.Copyright: ___ (c)2014 the American News (Aberdeen, S.D.)
