Source: Tulsa World, Okla.倉Jan. 17--The No. 1 uproar in the state this week -- and probably this year, unless OU wins or loses them all -- is the ruling that Oklahoma's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional.More than 500 comments have been registered under the news story documenting this event on our website. That's a lot of emotion, particularly given the fact that responses from super heroes, super rascals and super dreamers are no longer accepted -- you have to bring your real name to the keyboard. Before continuing with this piece, this note: I'm not gay and have no idea what campaigning for equal rights feels like. My rights seem to have come with the territory described by the very underrated Popeye, who sang "I am what I am."With appeals on top of appeals, who could guess when this state will see its first divorced gay couple?Fair factor: An equal right is not negotiable among those who qualify.Your religious, sexual or political beliefs, while legal, are not supposed to be factors when it comes time to enjoy your basic human rights.Fairness is the basis of the American life. Then if a basic freedom is abused, the law kicks in. When there's harm, call 911.Here's a question that seems to have slipped through a lot of the emotion stirred by the judge's24小時迷你倉ruling.What harm could the average law-observing gay couple cause to anyone? No gay has tried to convert me. And if gay people tried to impose their religious or political beliefs on me, I would say please stop, then, as would be the case with anybody else, I might employ one of my rights and call the fuzz to restore order. If a gay person deeply offends your religious beliefs, might the best action be a quiet prayer?Healthy Constitution: Unless a person can be arrested for being gay, gay people are going to be together.Who's a marriage license going to harm? The Constitution seems to have trumped majority rules, at least in a case when equal rights are at issue. There's plenty to worry about today. Here's my list, in no particular order: Crime, mistreated kids, poverty, political types out to get the homeless, lousy streets, the economy, the hungry, unemployment, underpaying jobs, drunk drivers, people being skinned at casinos, and people who still want this state to be a shining light in the horse-butchering industry. People with different religious beliefs are worrisome only when they venture outside the law.Copyright: ___ (c)2014 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)
